Happy Cinco!

I know it's been a while, folks. I've been busy out here in the "real world" trying to make moves. It's a poor excuse for ignoring you for so long so my apologies. This isn't even a real post which is the worst of it.

Here's a little history behind the holiday we celebrate alongside our Mexican friends. In light of the recent outbreak of so-called "swine flu," a welcome celebration of Mexican history is definitely in order. Here is the history of this joyous holiday we celebrate on the 5th of May each and every year (Thanks to Jennifer B. for passing along the info.):

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

So now you know.

Happy holidays, folks!

I was wondering where you were going with this...and then you pulled out "Sinko de Mayo." Congrats, hefleyhumor has now infected you, too. There is no cure.

Have you ever tried Mexican mayonnaise? I heard you can get swine flu if you swollow it.

Not sure what this "hefleyhumor" is you speak of, but i'm certain i had the same sense prior to meeting you so i'm gonna go ahead and call it "oslohumor" although it's probably not specific to either one of us. No 2 people have the same sense of humor so let's not go putting ourselves on any comedic pedestals!

I'm glad to know who "H" is now BTW. Couldn't figure it out on my own so thanks for coming clean!Welcome to the bloggersphere, my friend. I look forward to future exchanges!
